New Delhi: The decision to confer the 60th Jnanpith Award on Tamil poet and lyricist Vairamuthu has sparked a growing controversy, drawing criticism from sections of the literary community.

More than 200 writers and activists have reportedly voiced opposition to the decision. A joint letter signed by over 230 individuals, including noted writer Ambai, poet Sukumaran, and actor Rohini, has called for the award to be withdrawn.
The signatories argued that honouring an individual facing serious allegations could undermine the credibility and dignity of the award. Letters of protest have also reportedly been sent to institutions such as the Sahitya Akademi and the award’s governing body.
Critics have pointed to multiple sexual harassment allegations made against Vairamuthu during the MeToo movement as a key concern. While the poet has previously denied these allegations, the issue has resurfaced following the award announcement.
Opponents also highlighted that a cultural body in Kerala had earlier withdrawn an award conferred on him after similar protests.
Beyond the allegations, several critics have questioned Vairamuthu’s literary contribution. Some argue that his work is largely commercial in nature and does not meet the standards expected of the Jnanpith Award.
In their letter, the signatories claimed that his writings do not adequately reflect the depth, cultural values, or lived experiences of Tamil society. They further described his style as overly ornamental and lacking substantive emotional connection.

As the protests continue, attention remains on whether the awarding bodies will respond to the demands or maintain their decision.
