Chennai: Tamil Nadu politics is witnessing heightened tension as TVK chief Vijay visited Raj Bhavan for the second time today, only to leave without an invitation to form the government. The repeated setback sparked outrage among his supporters, who accused the Governor of delaying proceedings and favoring the BJP.

Vijay claims to have the backing of 112 MLAs, including members of the Congress party. Despite this, he has not yet been invited to assume the Chief Minister’s office, prompting large-scale protests outside the Raj Bhavan in Chennai.

Protesters Demand Floor Test in Assembly

Party workers insisted that the Legislative Assembly, not the Governor’s residence, is the appropriate forum to prove a majority. Citing the landmark Supreme Court judgment in the S.R. Bommai case, they argued that a floor test remains the only constitutionally valid method to determine government formation. With 108 MLAs, the TVK is now the single largest party in the Assembly, according to supporters, and they contend that Vijay should be sworn in without further delay.

The Governor has assured Vijay that no other party will be invited to form the government. However, he has requested that Vijay submit a signed list of all MLAs supporting him before proceeding with the oath of office, insisting that written confirmation of legislative support is necessary.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the Opposition, Palaniswami, has not yet sought an appointment with the Governor. Protests intensified as police struggled to maintain order. Party workers from Tiruppur vowed to stay in Chennai until the swearing-in ceremony is completed, asserting they will return home only after seeing their leader officially become Chief Minister.
