Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has moved closer to forming the next government in Tamil Nadu after receiving support from Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

With the latest backing, the party’s strength has reportedly reached 120 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly, crossing the majority mark required to form the government.

TVK had emerged as the single-largest party in the recently concluded Assembly elections but initially fell short of the numbers needed to stake claim independently.

Support From Allies Changes Political Equation

The Congress had earlier extended support to Vijay’s party, followed by the Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist). Their backing had taken TVK’s tally close to the halfway mark.

On Saturday, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan formally handed over a letter of support to TVK representatives. In his communication to Governor RV Arlekar, Thirumavalavan said the decision was taken to ensure “stable and democratic governance” in Tamil Nadu.

The IUML also submitted its support letter after discussions with TVK leaders. The move marked a significant shift, as the party had earlier hesitated to support Vijay’s formation due to its long-standing association with the DMK alliance.

VCK Clarifies Stand on Government Participation

Despite extending support, VCK clarified that it would support the government from outside and would not be part of the ministry.

Thirumavalavan stated that the decision was aimed at preventing political instability and ensuring that Tamil Nadu gets an elected government without constitutional complications.

He also confirmed that the party had informed DMK leadership about the move before making the decision public.

Vijay Likely to Stake Claim Soon

With the required support now in place, Vijay is expected to formally stake claim to form the government soon. Political observers believe the Governor may invite the TVK chief to take oath as Chief Minister in the coming days.

The development marks a major political breakthrough in Tamil Nadu, where the dominance of traditional Dravidian parties has faced an unprecedented challenge from Vijay’s newly formed political outfit.
