Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday declined to intervene in a petition filed against Uttar Pradesh cadre IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma, who has been appointed as a police observer for the ongoing West Bengal Legislative Assembly Elections 2026.
Hearing the matter, the High Court observed that it would not interfere in the case at this stage and said the issue would be taken up after April 29. The court’s stance effectively grants interim relief to the observer, allowing him to continue in his role for now.
The petition was filed by the Trinamool Congress under Article 226 of the Constitution of India, alleging “serious misconduct” by the officer. It claimed that his actions amounted to violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and risked undermining the fairness of the electoral process.
The plea was moved by Rajeev Kumar on behalf of the party, asserting that the conduct of the observer had compromised the integrity of the elections.
