Aichi-Nagoya: The Indian men’s hockey team delivered a memorable performance at the Asian Games 2026 on Saturday, defeating Malaysia 5-1 in the final to clinch the gold medal. The victory also secured India's direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Before the final, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and Hockey India had clarified that the Asian Games gold medallist would earn a direct qualification berth for LA 2028.
India started the final with an aggressive approach, looking to establish control from the opening minutes. A penalty corner gave the Indian team its first major opportunity, and captain Harmanpreet Singh converted it with a powerful drag-flick to put India ahead. Malaysia responded quickly and found the equaliser to bring the contest level. The first quarter ended with both teams locked at 1-1.
India regained the lead in the second quarter after earning another penalty corner. Jugraj Singh stepped up and converted the opportunity, restoring India’s 2-1 advantage.
The goal shifted the momentum back in India’s favour, but Malaysia continued to search for another equaliser. The Indian defence remained organised under pressure and repeatedly prevented Malaysia from converting its attacking opportunities.
As the final progressed, Malaysia continued to push forward in search of a second goal. India, however, maintained its defensive discipline and protected the narrow lead.
The Indian players stayed composed during the closing stages and successfully prevented Malaysia from finding a way back into the contest. The final whistle confirmed India’s 5-1 victory and another Asian Games hockey gold.
The victory over Malaysia not only gave India the Asian Games men’s hockey title but also secured a direct qualification place for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. India had reached the final after defeating Pakistan 4-3, while Malaysia booked its place in the title clash with a 2-1 win over South Korea.
The triumph also added to the individual achievements of India’s senior hockey players. Harmanpreet Singh became an Indian captain to win gold medals at two consecutive Asian Games, while Manpreet Singh became one of the Indian players to win Asian Games gold at three different editions.
India’s women’s hockey team had already secured gold at the Asian Games, defeating China 1-0 on October 2. The women’s team also earned direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics with its gold-medal victory. The men’s hockey gold added another major achievement to India’s Asian Games 2026 campaign. With the victory, India’s gold medal tally rose to 21.
