New Delhi: A major controversy has erupted in Bangladesh cricket after the Bangladesh Cricketers’ Welfare Association (BCWA) demanded the resignation of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director Nazmul Islam.
The association has made it clear that Bangladeshi cricketers will refuse to play matches until he steps down. This protest has already had serious consequences, as the opening match of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) could not begin due to players’ opposition.
The BCWA represents the interests and welfare of professional Bangladeshi cricketers. Its leaders stated that this protest is not symbolic but a firm decision aimed at protecting players’ dignity and unity.

During a press conference on Thursday, the association revealed that fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was directly affected by the issue but did not want to escalate the matter publicly.
According to the BCWA, Mustafizur preferred not to raise the complaint before the board. However, the association stressed that it is a player’s right to approach the welfare body when concerns arise, and the organization decided to act in the larger interest of all players.
The association firmly stated that the protest would continue until Nazmul Islam resigns from his post as BCB director.
Due to the players’ protest, the first match of the Bangladesh Premier League was delayed, creating embarrassment for the board. Following this, the BCB issued a show-cause notice against Nazmul Islam and the interim sports minister, seeking an explanation for the events that led to the disruption.
This situation highlights growing tension between players and the board, raising concerns about governance and communication within Bangladesh cricket.
The controversy traces back to comments made by Nazmul Islam against former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal. Earlier, after Mustafizur Rahman was released by Kolkata Knight Riders on instructions from the BCCI, tensions rose between the cricket boards of India and Bangladesh.
In response, Bangladesh considered extreme steps, including not sending its team to India for the T20 World Cup, requesting match relocation to Sri Lanka, and even banning IPL broadcasts in Bangladesh.
