New Delhi: Commonwealth Games 2026 has begun, and this time it has given a big surprise to sports fans all around the world. For the very first time, the Commonwealth Games will feature only 10 sports. This is going to be the smallest sports event in the history of the Commonwealth Games since 1994.

Why are there only 10 games?

The primary reason behind only 10 games is that the original host, Victoria in Australia, withdrew in 2023 after the cost of hosting became very high in comparison to what was planned.

The original estimated budget was AYD 2.6 billion, but the final cost soared up to around AUD 7 billion. The state official denied that they wouldn’t be taking away money from local hospitals and schools to fund the games.

This resulted in the Victorian government paying AUD 243 million as a settlement to the Commonwealth sports bodies in August 2023.
