Houston: Portugal's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign got off to a disappointing start after they were held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo in their Group K opener at NRG Stadium on Wednesday. Despite enjoying the majority of possession and creating several attacking opportunities, Portugal failed to convert their dominance into three points.

Portugal Strike Early but Fail to Build Advantage

Portugal made a bright start and took the lead just six minutes into the contest. Midfielder Joao Neves finished from close range after a well-worked move involving Pedro Neto, giving the European side an early advantage.

The goal appeared to set the tone for the match as Portugal dictated play through Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha, keeping Congo pinned back for long periods. However, their control of possession did not translate into enough clear-cut chances.

Congo Punish Portugal From Set Piece

After absorbing sustained pressure, DR Congo found a way back into the game shortly before halftime. Forward Yoane Wissa rose above Portugal's defence to head home from a corner in the 44th minute, levelling the score against the run of play.

The equaliser gave Congo renewed confidence, and they continued to defend in an organised manner while remaining dangerous on counter-attacks.

Ronaldo Struggles To Make Impact

Cristiano Ronaldo endured a quiet evening in attack as Congo's defenders limited his influence throughout the match. The veteran forward found little space in central areas and was unable to make the decisive contribution Portugal needed.

He finished without a goal or assist, while a late header was comfortably dealt with by the Congo goalkeeper.

Ronaldo Sends Message After Draw

Following the final whistle, Ronaldo addressed fans on social media, acknowledging Portugal's disappointing result while urging the team to remain focused.

"Not the start we wanted, but this is far from over. Head up and focus on the next game," Ronaldo wrote.

Portugal will now look to bounce back in their next Group K fixture as they seek to strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
