Glasgow: India had a splendid day at the Commonwealth Games 2026, where Olympic winner Neeraj Chopra won silver in the men's javelin throw event, while the country made history by clinching its maiden Commonwealth Games gold medals in judo.
Neeraj Chopra took the second place spot in the javelin event after managing a distance of 85.83 metres. The gold medal was won by Sri Lankan athlete Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage after he threw the javelin to a distance of 89.75 metres. Another Indian player, Yash Vir Singh claimed the bronze medal in this event after throwing his javelin to a distance of 85.41 metres.
The 28-year-old athlete, who won the gold medal in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, started off as the favorite in the competition. He took the lead after a 80.97m throw in his first attempt and then moved ahead again after his second attempt, where he threw 85.83m but failed to surpass the world record-breaking Pathirage's throw.
Another historic feat in the field of Judo has been accomplished by India as Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh won the nation's first-ever CWG gold medals in Judo.
Asmita was able to win the gold medal in the women's 48kg category after staging a come-from-behind victory over her opponent, Heidi Quach from Canada. Harsh made sure that this historic victory for his country continued when he won the men's 60kg category, beating Joshua Katz from Australia.
Yamini Mourya won the silver medal for India in the women's 57kg category.
Neeraj Chopra’s silver medal, along with the bronze of Yash Vir Singh, two gold medals in Judo and another silver medal by Yamini Mourya have helped boost India’s medal tally at the CWG 2026. It has been one of India’s most successful outings in the ongoing Glasgow Games.
