Kathmandu: Nepal’s premier T20 cricket competition is entering a new phase of growth, with international stars, greater commercial investment and technological upgrades expected to make the Nepal Premier League (NPL) 2026 bigger than ever. The third edition begins from today in Kathmandu, with defending champions Lumbini Lions taking on runners-up Sudurpaschim Royals in the opening fixture.

The eight-team tournament will continue until November 21, 2026, at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Stadium, bringing together leading Nepali players and several internationally recognised cricketers. Official recognition from the International Cricket Council (ICC), received on October 16, has further strengthened the competition’s standing in the global T20 landscape.

David Warner, Andre Russell and Shakib Al Hasan Headline Global Star Power

The latest edition features an impressive mix of international experience and franchise cricket talent. Former Australian captain David Warner will represent Kathmandu Gorkhas, while West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell joins Biratnagar Kings alongside Sri Lankan players Angelo Mathews and Charith Asalanka.  Sudurpaschim Royals will feature West Indies cricketers Sherfane Rutherford and Fabian Allen. Pokhara Avengers have recruited Bangladesh all-rounders Shakib Al Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin and Mehidy Hasan.

Karnali Yaks will have South African finisher David Miller, Pakistan’s Hussain Talat and Sahibzada Farhan, along with Bangladesh players Ariful Islam and Akbar Ali. Australian cricketer D’Arcy Short, Sri Lanka’s Niroshan Dickwella and Bangladesh all-rounder Sami Hossain will represent Lumbini Lions. The remaining franchises are Chitwan Rhinos, Janakpur Bolts and the eight-team competition’s other established sides, creating a broader platform for domestic talent to compete alongside overseas professionals.

ICC Recognition and DRS Technology Mark a New Chapter

ICC’s official recognition of the NPL on October 16 marks an important milestone for the competition. Performances in the league will now count towards players’ official T20 statistics, increasing the tournament’s relevance for domestic and international cricketers.  The 2026 edition will also introduce the Decision Review System (DRS) for the first time in Nepal’s tournament history. The technology will allow teams to challenge certain on-field umpiring decisions, adding another layer of scrutiny and professionalism to match proceedings.

Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah has wished the tournament success, describing the NPL as a significant celebration of the country’s sporting ambitions. He also welcomed the overseas players and commentators participating in the competition.

NPL 2026 Eyes Rs 700 Million Revenue and Rs 1.5 Billion in Business

Beyond the cricket, the Nepal Premier League is increasingly emerging as a commercial opportunity for franchises, sponsors, hospitality businesses and local enterprises. According to the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), combined revenue from sponsorships and ticket sales is projected to reach approximately NPR 700 million. Sponsorship income alone is expected to contribute around NPR 200 million.

CAN Treasurer Padma Bahadur Khadka indicated that overall business transactions associated with the tournament could reach approximately NPR 1.5 billion during the month with franchise expenditure expected to contribute significantly to the total.  The league’s financial trajectory has also strengthened over its first two editions. The inaugural season generated NPR 276.96 million in revenue, while earnings during the second edition climbed beyond NPR 473.6 million.

Increased player spending, corporate partnerships, merchandise sales and higher hotel demand are expected to support the league’s expanding economic footprint. CAN Secretary Paras Khadka has described the NPL’s development over three years as the emergence of a full-fledged industry, while highlighting the continuing need for greater investment in cricket infrastructure.

With international stars, official statistical recognition and new match technology, the Nepal Premier League 2026 is seeking to establish itself as more than a domestic sporting event. Its growing commercial ambitions could also strengthen Nepal’s position in the regional franchise cricket market.
