Dew or Batting Firepower? Shreyas Iyer Explains India’s T20I Defeat Against West Indies

Shreyas Iyer has identified dew and the batting-friendly Ranchi pitch as key factors behind India’s failure to defend 249 against the West Indies. Shai Hope’s unbeaten 102 and Sherfane Rutherford’s explosive 84 powered a stunning nine-wicket chase with nine balls remaining in the second T20I.

Ranchi: India’s formidable total of 249 for five proved insufficient against a sensational West Indies batting performance in the second T20I, with captain Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford powering the visitors to a remarkable victory. Following the defeat, Shreyas Iyer highlighted the impact of dew and the batting-friendly Ranchi pitch while acknowledging the opposition’s outstanding execution.

India had entered the contest with confidence after Iyer’s unbeaten 102 in the opening match of the five-game T20I series helped the hosts secure victory. However, the second encounter produced a dramatic reversal, as Hope delivered an unbeaten century to guide the West Indies to a successful chase of 250.

Dew Factor and Pitch Conditions Trouble India

Explaining why India could not defend such a substantial total, Iyer pointed to the challenging conditions that developed during the second innings. The dew made it difficult for bowlers to maintain control, while the pitch offered little room for error against aggressive batters.

India’s total of 249 for five would have put considerable pressure on most teams, but the West Indies reached the target with nine balls remaining. Iyer also acknowledged that even small mistakes in line, length or execution could prove costly on a surface where mistimed deliveries were frequently punished.

Rather than singling out individual Indian players for criticism, the Indian batter credited the visitors for capitalising on the conditions and shifting the momentum through a decisive partnership.

Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford Power West Indies

Hope was the standout performer, remaining unbeaten on 102 off just 45 deliveries. His explosive innings included the second-fastest T20I century by a West Indies batter, underlining the visitors’ remarkable batting depth and ability to chase a daunting target.

Rutherford provided equally important support, smashing 84 off 37 balls. Their partnership transformed a difficult chase into a commanding victory after the West Indies stumbled to five for two early in the innings.

Hope later reflected on the importance of his partnership with Rovman Powell, explaining that the team began believing in the possibility of victory once the recovery gathered momentum. He also emphasised the need to build partnerships and take calculated risks rather than allow the required run rate to dictate every decision.

Iyer Praises India’s Batting Contributions

Despite the defeat, Iyer expressed satisfaction with the performances of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, along with Mayank’s contribution. Samson delivered an impressive 84, helping India establish a commanding total, while Mayank claimed three top-order wickets.

Iyer maintained that the West Indies batters deserved credit for turning the game around after the early breakthroughs.

Hope, who was named Player of the Match, also praised Roston Chase for his bowling performance on a surface that strongly favoured batters.

Reflecting on his own century, Hope attributed his consistency to preparation and mental readiness, while acknowledging that luck also plays a role in cricket.

The result highlighted the West Indies’ explosive T20 batting capabilities and raised questions about India’s ability to defend big totals under dew affected conditions. With more matches remaining in the series, India will look to improve their execution with the ball and find ways to contain aggressive opposition batters in high-scoring encounters.
