New Delhi: In a dramatic Group A encounter of the FIFA World Cup 2026, the South Korea national football team produced a spirited second-half comeback to defeat the Czech Republic national football team 2-1 at the Guadalajara Stadium in Mexico on Friday.
The opening 45 minutes offered limited attacking action as both teams focused on structure and discipline. South Korea enjoyed slightly more possession but struggled to break through a well-organised Czech defence. The Czech side also failed to convert a few set-piece opportunities, resulting in a goalless first half.

The match came alive in the 59th minute when Czech Republic took the lead. Ladislav Krejci headed home from a long throw delivered by Vladimir Coufal, giving his side a 1-0 advantage and energising their supporters inside the stadium.
South Korea responded swiftly, showing resilience and attacking intent. Hwang In-beom produced a composed finish to level the score, restoring parity and shifting momentum back in Korea’s favour. His goal came after sustained pressure and sharp movement in midfield.
The Czech Republic thought they had regained the lead in the 77th minute through Tomas Soucek, but the goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR check confirmed the infringement. This proved to be a decisive moment in the match.
South Korea capitalised on the opportunity and struck the winner soon after. Hwang In-beom delivered a precise cross from the right flank, and Oh Hyeon-gyu connected from close range. The effort deflected off goalkeeper Matej Kovar before finding the net, putting Korea ahead 2-1.
Despite six minutes of stoppage time, Czech Republic could not find an equaliser as South Korea defended resolutely to secure all three points. The result gives South Korea a strong start in Group A alongside co-host Mexico, who also won their opening fixture.
