New Delhi: Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi created history on Saturday by becoming the youngest player ever to represent India in international cricket, eclipsing a record held by batting legend Sachin Tendulkar for more than three decades.
The 15-year-old received his maiden India cap from Tilak Varma ahead of the second T20 International against England at Old Trafford in Manchester.
With his debut, Sooryavanshi surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing milestone. Tendulkar had made his international debut against Pakistan in 1989 at the age of 16 years and 205 days, a record that stood for 36 years. Sooryavanshi's debut marks another remarkable chapter in what has been a meteoric rise through the ranks of Indian cricket.
The young opener earned his India call-up after an extraordinary IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals. He finished the season as the tournament's highest run-scorer with 776 runs, striking at an astonishing 230, while also winning the Orange Cap, Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Emerging Player awards.
He also smashed a record 72 sixes, breaking Chris Gayle's record for the most sixes in a single IPL season.
Born in Tajpur in Bihar's Samastipur district, Sooryavanshi has consistently broken age-related records throughout his career. He made his first-class debut in 2024 at just 12 years and 284 days before earning selection to India's Under-19 team later that year.
His 58-ball century against Australia in a Youth Test quickly established him as one of India's brightest young talents. Soon after, Rajasthan Royals signed him for ₹1.10 crore, making him the youngest player to secure an IPL contract.
Sooryavanshi announced himself on the IPL stage by hitting a six off the very first ball he faced on debut. Just days later, he became the youngest centurion in IPL history, smashing a 35-ball hundred against Gujarat Titans. After an impressive debut season, he elevated his game further in IPL 2026, emerging as the league's standout performer.
Before earning his India cap, Sooryavanshi had already enjoyed international success at the junior level. He starred in India's triumph at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, blasting 175 off just 80 balls in the final against England and winning the Player of the Series award.
He also impressed for India A, scoring 211 runs in the tri-series, including a blistering 94 off 29 balls in the final to help India lift the title. His senior India debut against England marks another milestone in a career that has progressed at an extraordinary pace.
