Aichi-Nagoya: India’s women’s hockey team scripted a landmark chapter at the 2026 Asian Games on Friday, defeating defending champions China 1-0 in the gold-medal match at Kakamigahara, Japan, to reclaim the continental title after a 44-year wait.
The victory restored India to the summit of Asian women’s hockey for the first time since the historic 1982 Asian Games triumph in New Delhi. Hockey India’s official match record confirms India’s 1-0 victory over China in the final.
The decisive moment came in the 10th minute when Lalremsiami produced a superb reverse-hit finish into the roof of the net. The move was fashioned through the combined work of captain Salima Tete and Sakshi, whose precise final pass created the opening for the Indian forward.
India, however, had to withstand sustained pressure from China as the contest progressed. The Chinese side earned a penalty stroke after Sushila was penalised for a push from behind, presenting Zhang Ying with an opportunity to level the contest. Goalkeeper Savita Punia stood firm, making a crucial one-handed save to her left and preserving India’s slender advantage.
## India’s Unbeaten Asian Games Campaign
The gold medal brings an emphatic conclusion to an impressive Asian Games campaign for the Indian side. India had entered the final unbeaten and secured its place in the title clash after a 2-0 semifinal victory over South Korea. Ishika broke the deadlock in the 44th minute before a second goal, resulting from a deflection off a Korean defender, gave India a two-goal cushion.
## From 1982 Gold To 1998 And 2018 Silver
India’s return to the Asian Games summit carries particular historical significance. The team’s only previous women’s hockey gold had come in 1982. Since then, India had reached the final in 1998 and 2018, but had to settle for silver on both occasions.
## Asian Games Gold Secures Los Angeles Olympic Spot
The title also secures India’s direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, adding further significance to a victory that ends one of the longest waits in the country’s Asian Games hockey history.
## A New Chapter For Indian Women’s Hockey
For a team that arrived in Japan carrying the weight of a four-decade title drought, the 1-0 triumph over China represents both a restoration of past glory and the emergence of a new generation capable of carrying Indian women’s hockey back onto the continental summit.
