Messi vs Mbappe, the golden boot race explained (Img: X)
New Delhi: As the FIFA World Cup 2026 heads towards its grand finale, another high-stakes contest is unfolding away from the race for the trophy. While Argentina and Spain prepare for the title clash, football fans are also watching a gripping battle for the Golden Boot, with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe separated by the slimmest of margins.
Both superstars have scored eight goals in the tournament, but the award is no longer just about finding the back of the net. FIFA's tie-break rules mean assists and, if needed, minutes played could ultimately decide the winner.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi strengthened his position in the race during his side's dramatic 2-1 semifinal victory over England. Although he did not score, the veteran forward played a decisive role by providing assists for both of Argentina's goals.
Those two assists took Messi's tournament tally to four, moving him ahead of Mbappe, who has three assists. At the moment, if neither player adds to their goal tally, Messi would claim the Golden Boot because of his superior assist record.
The Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the most goals during the tournament. However, when two or more players finish level on goals, FIFA applies tie-breakers in the following order:
With both Messi and Mbappe level on eight goals, assists have become the key factor. Since Messi currently leads in that category, he sits at the top of the standings heading into the final weekend.
France may have missed out on the World Cup final after losing to Spain in the semifinals, but Mbappe's campaign is not over. The French captain will feature in the third-place playoff, giving him one more opportunity to improve his tally before the tournament concludes.
A goal in that match would take Mbappe to nine goals, forcing Messi to respond in the final against Spain. Even if Messi scores once to draw level again, Mbappe could still remain in contention depending on the final goal count and the tie-breakers.
Simply put, every goal Mbappe scores increases the pressure on Argentina's captain before the World Cup final.

While Mbappe has once again showcased his finishing ability, Messi's influence has extended beyond scoring.
Throughout the tournament, the Argentine captain has combined goals with creativity, dictating attacks and creating chances for teammates. His performances in the knockout stages have underlined why he continues to be regarded as one of football's greatest playmakers.
That all-round contribution has now placed him in pole position for the Golden Boot.
For nearly a decade, Messi and Mbappe have shared some of football's biggest stages, from club football to the FIFA World Cup. Now, the two stars are once again locked in a race that could be decided by a single goal, an assist or even the smallest statistical margin.
Messi has the opportunity to finish the tournament with both the World Cup trophy and the Golden Boot. Mbappe, meanwhile, will aim to defend the individual honour he won in Qatar by delivering one final standout performance for France.
