New Delhi: Indian para-athletics has been plunged into mourning following the reported death of Neeraj Yadav, a three-time Asian Para Games gold medallist, who allegedly died by suicide at his flat on Tuesday night. The 42-year-old athlete, who represented India in the F55 category, was suspected of having consumed poison, according to reports. A postmortem examination was underway at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital in Delhi on Wednesday, October 28, as authorities sought to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

Yadav’s death has sent shockwaves through the Indian para-sports community, where he was respected for his achievements on the international stage and his determination to overcome significant physical challenges. The circumstances leading up to his death have not yet been conclusively established, and no confirmed link has been established between his death and the professional difficulties he faced.

India’s chief para-athletics coach, S Satyanarayana, confirmed that he had received information about Yadav’s death. According to the coach, preliminary information suggested that the athlete may have consumed poison at his residence on Tuesday night. The development was deeply distressing for the para-athletics fraternity, although the full details remained unclear.

Paralympic champion Sumit Antil and fellow para-athlete Vipin Kasana were reportedly present at GTB Hospital following the incident. Their presence underscored the concern within the sporting community as athletes and officials awaited further information.

Yadav’s death has also drawn attention to the circumstances surrounding his absence from the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games, from which he was unable to compete because of an ongoing doping suspension. Satyanarayana suggested that missing the continental competition may have been emotionally difficult for the athlete, who had previously enjoyed considerable success at the Asian Para Games. However, the coach acknowledged that Yadav’s state of mind and the factors that preceded his death could not be determined with certainty.

For elite para-athletes, the Asian Para Games represent a major opportunity to compete for international honours, improve their standing in the sport and secure recognition for their achievements. Strong performances at the event can also open avenues for government cash awards, sponsorship opportunities and employment linked to sporting excellence. Whether these considerations affected Yadav personally remains unknown.

Neeraj Yadav’s journey from physical adversity to international success

Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Yadav carved out a place for himself among India’s accomplished para-athletes despite being diagnosed with post-polio residual paralysis at the age of seven. Rather than allowing the condition to end his sporting ambitions, he continued to pursue competitive sport and initially participated in wheelchair tennis between 2005 and 2012.

He subsequently transitioned to para-athletics, where his performances began attracting attention. His breakthrough came at the 2015 Delhi State Athletics Meet, where he won gold medals in the shot put, javelin throw and discus throw. The results marked an important milestone in his sporting career and established him as a promising competitor across multiple throwing disciplines.

Yadav reached a new high point at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. Competing in the men’s F55 javelin throw, he secured the gold medal with an effort of 29.84 metres, setting an Asian record in the event. The performance strengthened his reputation as a leading Indian para-athlete and brought him international recognition.

His achievements continued at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, where he won two gold medals in the javelin throw and discus throw. Those victories took his Asian Para Games gold-medal tally to three, cementing his place among the successful Indian athletes in the F55 classification.

The F55 category is part of para-athletics’ field-event classification system for athletes with eligible impairments affecting muscle power, limb function or coordination. Such classifications are designed to enable fairer competition between athletes with comparable levels of activity limitation.

Doping suspension cast a shadow over his sporting career

Despite his achievements, Yadav’s career subsequently became entangled in an anti-doping case. The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) provisionally suspended him after an out-of-competition sample collected in Bengaluru in October 2023 reportedly returned a positive result for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid prohibited under anti-doping regulations.

Stanozolol is a performance-enhancing substance that falls within the category of anabolic agents prohibited in competitive sport. Anti-doping proceedings can involve sample analysis, disciplinary hearings and challenges to the evidence, with the applicable rules determining the outcome of an individual case.

Yadav subsequently sought DNA testing of his sample through the anti-doping disciplinary process. His suspension remained a barrier to his participation in the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games, according to the information available in the original report.

The case had a significant bearing on his competitive prospects because the suspension prevented him from participating in a major international event. Nevertheless, the precise impact of the proceedings on his personal life and emotional well-being has not been established, and it would be premature to attribute his death to any single factor.

Yadav’s passing marks a devastating development in the life of a sportsman who progressed from an early-life physical disability to winning three gold medals at one of Asia’s premier para-sport competitions. As the investigation continues, the circumstances surrounding his death remain to be clarified.

His sporting journey serves as a reminder of the determination required to compete at the highest level of para-athletics, while the tragedy has left the Indian para-sports community awaiting answers about the events that preceded his death.
