New Delhi: India suffered a major injury concern during their ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 Group A match against the Netherlands after all-rounder Shreyanka Patil was forced off the field with a suspected ankle injury at Headingley on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on the first ball of the sixth over of the Dutch innings and immediately raised concerns within the Indian camp.
Shreyanka had just come on to bowl when she chased a ball towards the mid-on region. While attempting to field, she appeared to twist her right ankle and collapsed to the ground in visible discomfort.
Teammates and medical staff rushed to her aid as she clutched her ankle in pain. After receiving treatment on the field, she was eventually stretchered off, unable to place weight on the injured leg.
The sight of the 23-year-old leaving the field visibly distressed was a worrying moment for both players and supporters.
India's team management has not yet released an official statement regarding the severity of the injury. However, the manner in which Shreyanka exited the field has sparked concerns about a potentially lengthy recovery period.
Shafali Verma completed the remainder of the over after Shreyanka's departure as India adjusted their bowling plans during the match.
The latest setback comes after a challenging period in Shreyanka's career. The off-spin bowling all-rounder has battled multiple injuries in recent years, including a finger fracture during the 2024 Women's Asia Cup and subsequent issues involving her legs and thumb.
Despite those challenges, she worked her way back to competitive cricket and played an important role for Royal Challengers Bengaluru during their successful Women's Premier League campaign earlier this year.
Shreyanka's ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes her a valuable part of India's T20 setup. Her effectiveness in the powerplay overs and energetic fielding have been key assets for the team.
With crucial group-stage matches still ahead, India will be hoping the injury is not as serious as initially feared and that one of their most versatile players can return to action soon.
