New Delhi: Samajwadi Party patriarch and three-time Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Mulayam Singh Yadav passed away at the age of 83 on on Monday at a hospital in Gurugram where he was undergoing treatment after his health had deteriorated. 

His demise has sent shock waves across the political circles. Condolences are pouring in from all quarters including Samajwadi Party leaders and workers.

Born on 22 November 1939 in Saifai, Etawah UP, Mulayam Singh Yadav will always be remembered for his glorious political career. Presnetly he was the Member of Parliament. Mulayam Singh was the UP Chief Minister for three times. He was also the Union Defence Minister from 1996 to 1998. 

Mulayam Singh Yadav is also called the son of the soil because he came from a farmer's family and believed in grassroots politics. Once he entered politics, Mulayam Singh never looked back. 

Mulayam Singh was 8 times MLA in UP, 7 times MP, 3 times UP Chief Minister, Union Defence Minister and 1 time Member of UP Legislative Council.

Mulayam Singh Yadav had a versatile personality. From farming to wrestling to teaching and finally to politics, Mulayam Singh has seen every shade in his life. Earlier he was associated with different political parties, but finally he formed his own political outfit 'Samajwadi Party'. 

Mulayam Singh started his political journey under the guidance of a prominent politician Ram Manohar Lohia whom Mulayam Singh considered his guru. He was first elected to the UP Legislative Assembly in 1967. 

Mulayam Singh reached the UP Vidhan Sabha 8 times. He became a minister in Uttar Pradesh for the first time in 1977. He was also elected president of Lok Dal, an ally of Janata Dal in 1980. In 1982, he also was the Leader of Opposition in the UP Legislative Assembly.

Mulayam Singh Yadav became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time in 1989. In 1992, he founded the Samajwadi Party. In 1993, he again became the Chief Minister of UP. In September 2003, he took oath as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the third time.

Mulayam Singh was also one of the architects and strategists of religion and caste politics in UP. But he tried to maintain a balance between all religions and castes to get their support.
