Hyderabad: Senior Telangana-cadre IAS officer Jayesh Ranjan is planning to seek voluntary retirement from service, months after the state government appointed Sanjay Jaju as Chief Secretary, bypassing Ranjan, who was also part of the 1992-batch IAS cohort.
Ranjan, whose scheduled superannuation is in September 2027, is reportedly considering an early exit from the bureaucracy to explore opportunities outside government. According to media reports, he intends to submit his application for voluntary retirement in January 2027. However, the proposed move should be distinguished from a formally accepted retirement, which would require the prescribed administrative process.
The development has attracted attention within Telangana’s administrative establishment, given Ranjan’s prominent role in the state’s information technology, industrial development and investment-promotion initiatives. Although his decision has been linked in media reports to his exclusion from consideration for the Chief Secretary’s post, the officer has cited personal reasons for his proposed departure.
The Telangana government appointed Sanjay Jaju as Chief Secretary in June 2026 following his return from central deputation. The appointment ended speculation over the succession to the state’s top bureaucratic position, for which Ranjan had also been considered a possible contender.
Ranjan’s responsibilities had undergone changes before and after the appointment. In April 2025, he was moved out of the Industries and Information Technology portfolios, which he had overseen for several years, and assigned responsibilities in the Chief Minister’s Office concerning industries and investment. He was subsequently transferred to the Metropolitan Area and Urban Development Department in December 2025.
In a further administrative reshuffle on October 28, 2026, the state government appointed him Special Chief Secretary to the Environment, Forests, Science and Technology Department and placed him in additional charge as Director General of the Environment Protection Training and Research Institute (EPTRI).
Ranjan has been closely associated with Telangana’s efforts to establish Hyderabad as a major technology and investment destination. During his tenure in the Industries and IT departments, he worked on initiatives aimed at attracting businesses, supporting startups and strengthening the state’s innovation ecosystem.
He was associated with platforms such as T-Hub, WE Hub and T-Works, which support entrepreneurship, women-led enterprises and product development. His work also involved engagement with investors and technology companies as Telangana sought to expand its industrial and digital economy.
His proposed departure comes against the backdrop of changes in the state’s senior administrative structure. If his VRS application is submitted and accepted, Ranjan would leave service ahead of his scheduled retirement in September 2027.
As of the reports concerning his plans, the proposed early retirement remained distinct from a completed exit from the IAS. No final conclusion should be drawn about the reasons behind his decision beyond what has been attributed to him or independently established by reliable reporting.
