Two jetties constructed on the Hatania Doania river collapsed on Sunday after Cyclone Bulbul hit Namkhana area in South 24 Parganas.

South 24 Parganas: Two jetties constructed on the Hatania Doania river collapsed on Sunday after Cyclone Bulbul hit Namkhana area in South 24 Parganas.

"Two jetties at the Hatania Doania river got damaged after Cyclone Bulbul hit Namkhana area in South 24 Parganas" a district official said.

Jetties are built so that a channel to the river and ocean stays open for navigation purposes as well as to prevent streams from meandering naturally. At least seven persons have died and 4.65 lakh people have been affected due to Cyclone Bulbul in the state, West Bengal's Department of Disaster Management and Civil Defence said.

Also, extensive damage to Sunderbans forests has been reported and a detailed assessment is being done, the department had said. 

The severe cyclonic storm Bulbul had wreaked havoc in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas region on Sunday. Due to the speedy winds, several trees were uprooted and roads were blocked forcing the administration to carry out road clearance work.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that the Centre is monitoring the situation closely after Cyclone Bulbul hit Eastern India and assured the West Bengal government of full support. (ANI)
