Apple iPhone 18 Launch Delayed to 2027 Amid Chip Shortages and Foldable Model Prep

New Delhi: Apple, traditionally launching new iPhones every September, may break its pattern in 2026. Reports indicate that the standard iPhone 18 launch could be postponed until the first half of 2027. This would mark a rare disruption in Apple’s yearly release schedule.

Chip Shortages and Rising Costs

According to Nikkei Asia, Apple is grappling with rising costs for memory chips and other essential components. By delaying the standard iPhone 18, the company aims to optimize its resources and focus on premium models, which generate higher profits. The delay could also help Apple navigate supply chain challenges more effectively.

Foldable iPhone Adds Complexity

Another factor contributing to the postponement is Apple’s work on its first foldable iPhone. Manufacturing such a device requires advanced materials and complex production processes. Apple appears to be prioritizing careful rollout of the foldable model to avoid technical issues, further impacting the launch timeline of the standard iPhone 18.

Previous Indications of Delay

This is not the first hint of the iPhone 18 delay. Industry analysts, including Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, The Information, and Ming-Chi Kuo, have previously suggested that Apple may skip the 2026 launch for the standard model. Some reports indicate that the iPhone 18e might debut in early 2027 instead.

Expected Features of iPhone 18

Leaks suggest that the iPhone 18 could feature simplified camera control buttons and may omit the capacitive touch sensor to reduce costs. RAM is expected to increase to 12GB from 8GB in current models, while the front camera may see an upgrade from 18MP to 24MP.

Multiple iPhone Models in Pipeline

Apple reportedly has at least five new iPhone models in development, including iPhone Air 2, standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable iPhone. The Air 2 shipment is uncertain and may launch alongside the iPhone 19 series in September 2027.

What to Expect in the 2026 September Event

The 2026 September launch event is likely to showcase the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone. The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 are expected to be delayed until 2027, aligning with Apple’s strategy to manage supply chain constraints and optimize production for complex devices.
