Apple is quietly reshaping the iPhone’s future. A foldable model, seven-device lineup, and a radical shift in launch timing are coming. What Apple plans for 2026–27 could change how and when you buy an iPhone forever.
Apple is planning a major overhaul of the iPhone release
New Delhi: Apple Inc is preparing for one of the most significant transformations in its iPhone strategy in over a decade, with plans to expand its smartphone line-up to seven models by 2027, according to a report by The Information.
The move signals a broader shift in how the world’s most valuable smartphone brand designs, releases, and markets its flagship product.
Currently, Apple offers five iPhone variants each year. By 2027, that number is expected to grow to seven, reflecting the company’s ambition to address a wider range of consumer needs and price points.

The expanded portfolio reportedly will include traditional models, premium devices, and entirely new form factors, marking a departure from Apple’s historically streamlined approach.
One of the most anticipated additions to Apple’s future line-up is its first-ever foldable iPhone, expected to launch in 2026. Described as the “star” of that year’s range, the device is reportedly being positioned as a premium offering and could redefine Apple’s hardware design philosophy.
Industry insiders compare the foldable design to “two titanium iPhone Airs placed side by side,” highlighting Apple’s focus on durability, thinness, and advanced materials. The foldable iPhone is expected to compete directly with existing foldable devices from Samsung and other rivals, but with Apple’s trademark ecosystem integration.
Alongside expanding its product range, Apple is also planning a major overhaul of its release calendar. According to Bloomberg, beginning in 2026 the company will stagger iPhone launches across two periods each year instead of unveiling all models in the fall.
Under the new strategy, high-end models such as the Pro variants and the foldable iPhone will continue to debut in autumn. Meanwhile, standard models, an “e” version, and a refreshed iPhone Air could arrive roughly six months later.

This split launch approach aims to create steadier revenue streams throughout the year while easing pressure on Apple’s engineering and manufacturing teams. By spacing out releases, Apple can refine production timelines and better manage supply chains.
The iPhone Air is reportedly being used as a testing platform for new technologies and designs that may eventually be incorporated into the foldable iPhone. Sources indicate it will not follow an annual upgrade cycle and is unlikely to be positioned as a mass-market product.
Together, these changes suggest Apple is entering a new era of experimentation—one that could reshape the future of the iPhone.
