New Delhi: The central government has begun taking strict measures to combat the growing digital arrest scam in the country. In this scam, cybercriminals pose as police or law enforcement officials to intimidate and defraud people. To curb such incidents, the government has directed WhatsApp and other messaging platforms to implement strict security measures.

Device ID Blocking on WhatsApp

The government has directed WhatsApp to block device IDs used in digital arrest scams. Accused often target victims through WhatsApp calls, messages, and video calls. Therefore, plans are underway to track and block criminals through device identification.

Preparations to Implement Skype-Like Safety Features

According to sources, the government is now considering implementing Skype-like security features on platforms like WhatsApp. This will further strengthen user verification and data security. Additionally, under the IT Rules 2021, there may be an emphasis on preserving data of deleted accounts for 180 days to assist investigating agencies.

Fake Apps and APK Files Under Monitoring

The government plans to identify and block dangerous APK files and fake apps. This step is considered important against cybercriminals who steal personal information or defraud people through fake applications.

Recommendations from High-Level Committee of Home Ministry

According to reports, an Inter-Departmental Committee (IDC) constituted by the Union Home Ministry has suggested several security measures to WhatsApp. These include technical and surveillance measures to prevent crimes such as fraud by impersonating police or government officials. WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has agreed to these suggestions and has already begun work on some of them.

What is a Device ID?

A Device ID is a unique identification of any mobile phone or gadget, such as the IMEI number, MAC address, and device serial number. The IMEI is used for identification within mobile networks, while the MAC address is used for identification within Wi-Fi networks. Devices can be tracked based on these identifications.

What is a digital arrest scam?

In a digital arrest scam, fraudsters pose as police or investigative agency officials and intimidate victims. They use threats of arrest to create psychological pressure and then extort money in the name of online investigation or cooperation. In many cases, victims are kept under constant surveillance via video calls, a practice known as digital arrest.

These government measures are expected to reduce digital fraud cases and provide a safer online environment for people.
