New Delhi: With the rapidly increasing number of online fraud and telecom fraud cases in India, the Sanchar Saathi platform has become a crucial security tool for users. Launched by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), this platform is designed for mobile security, identity protection, and cyber fraud prevention. Through it, ordinary users can not only access information about the numbers issued in their name, but also block stolen phones and file complaints about any type of telecom fraud.

How does Sanchar Saathi work?

Sanchar Saathi consists of two key modules CEIR and TAFCOP. CEIR, or Central Equipment Identity Register, allows stolen or lost mobile phones to be blocked to prevent misuse. The TAFCOP module allows users to see how many SIM cards are issued in their name and whether any of them contain fake SIM cards.

This entire system is directly connected to telecom operators and government databases, enabling real-time monitoring and prompt action. The government has clarified that this platform is proving extremely effective in preventing crimes like mobile theft and identity theft. The app is available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store and will soon be pre-installed on many phones.

In what cases does Sanchar Saathi help?

Sanchar Saathi is useful in all types of mobile fraud, such as fake SIM cards, fraudulent calls, KYC scams, banking fraud, and threats or blackmail from unknown numbers. If someone has obtained a SIM card by misusing your documents, the TAFCOP section immediately detects this. The CEIR module also helps block stolen phones or counterfeit phones manufactured with IMEI changes.

Process for reporting fraud on Sanchar Saathi

To file a fraud complaint, open the Sanchar Saathi app or its official website. Go to the Fraud Management section and select the Report Fraud option. The user then needs to enter their mobile number, identification information, and complete details of the number or incident from which the fraud occurred. Upon submitting a complaint, they receive a reference ID, which allows the user to track the status of their complaint. The entire process is online, eliminating the need to visit a police station or telecom center.

How is action taken after a complaint?

Upon filing a complaint, the DoT team begins investigating the matter by obtaining information from telecom companies. If the complaint involves a fake SIM or identity theft, the SIM is immediately blocked. In cases of stolen phones, their IMEI is blacklisted to prevent them from working on any network. In some cases, the police or cyber cell also contact the user to obtain further information.

How is the money lost in the fraud recovered?

Upon filing a complaint, Sanchar Saathi first blocks the number or device to prevent further transactions. The complaint is then automatically sent to the I4C Cyber Crime portal and the relevant state's cyber police. An immediate alert is sent to the bank and police, which then freezes the suspicious account. If the money is still in the transaction process, the bank stops it.

If the investigation determines the transaction to be fraudulent, the bank returns the amount to the victim as per RBI regulations. While it's not always possible to recover the money, Sanchar Saathi's help significantly increases the chances of recovery.
