New Delhi: OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch its upcoming GPT-5.6 artificial intelligence model through a limited preview, instead of making it widely available at once, after concerns were raised by the US government over security risks linked to advanced AI systems.
According to a report by The Information, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told employees during an internal question-and-answer session that the company would move ahead with a staggered release following a request from the Trump administration. Under the reported plan, early access to GPT-5.6 will initially be restricted to a small group of enterprise customers.
The report also claims that companies seeking access during the preview phase may need approval from the federal government on a case-by-case basis. The move is being viewed as part of a broader effort by US authorities to closely examine who gets access to powerful new AI models before they are released more widely.
The reported arrangement would allow OpenAI to continue testing and refining GPT-5.6 while limiting exposure during the initial rollout. A broader launch is expected only after the government-reviewed preview phase, though OpenAI has not publicly announced any revised timeline for the model.
The development comes at a time when governments around the world are increasing scrutiny of advanced artificial intelligence platforms. Policymakers are trying to balance innovation with national security, especially as newer AI systems become more capable of handling complex reasoning, coding, research and automation tasks.
The reported OpenAI plan appears to be less restrictive than recent measures involving Anthropic. Earlier reports had claimed that the US administration directed Anthropic to suspend access to some of its latest AI models under export-control-related concerns, including restrictions affecting certain foreign nationals.
By comparison, OpenAI’s reported approach would not completely halt deployment. Instead, it would allow selected enterprise customers to access GPT-5.6 under a controlled framework while government agencies review potential security implications.
The episode underlines how AI policy in the United States continues to evolve rapidly. As leading technology companies race to build more powerful models, government oversight is becoming an increasingly important factor in how and when these systems reach the market.
OpenAI has not made any official public announcement about GPT-5.6 or its wider release schedule. For now, the reported plan suggests that the model may first reach only a limited set of approved enterprise users before being expanded to a larger customer base.
