New Delhi: Apple has reportedly asked some suppliers to reduce component production for its latest flagship smartphones, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, as higher prices and rising memory chip costs weigh on consumer demand.

According to a report by Nikkei Asia, the technology giant has adopted a more cautious approach to shipments. Component orders for October were reportedly cut by at least 15% compared with the company’s initial requests. Reuters said it could not independently verify the report, while Apple had not immediately responded to its request for comment.

Higher Prices Put Pressure on Demand

The latest iPhone Pro models have become more expensive than their predecessors. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max begins at $1,299—an increase of $100 for each model compared with the starting prices of the previous generation.

The higher price tags may be making consumers more cautious about upgrading their devices, particularly as household budgets face pressure from rising costs. The timing of Apple's product launches could also be influencing demand, according to the report.

Memory Chip Shortage Adds to Costs

The global shortage of memory chips is creating additional challenges for smartphone manufacturers. Demand from artificial intelligence data centres has increased competition for advanced memory supplies, pushing up component costs across the electronics industry.

Apple has previously raised prices for some iPad and MacBook models amid higher memory and storage expenses. Increasing memory requirements for AI-powered features are also making these components more important to smartphone makers.

Foldable iPhone Could Face Pricing Challenges

Apple's newly introduced foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, could face similar concerns if high prices discourage potential buyers. Its reported price of nearly ₹3 lakh may limit its appeal, while the complexity of manufacturing foldable displays presents additional production challenges.

The reported order cuts highlight the challenge of balancing premium pricing with consumer demand in an increasingly expensive smartphone market.
