Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday arrived at the Kolkata Airport to take stock of the situation in the wake of cyclone Amphan and conduct an aerial survey. He was received by West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Cyclone Amphan crossed West Bengal coast last evening and gradually weakened into a deep depression over Bangladesh and its neighbourhood, informed the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Director General SN Pradhan on Thursday said that normalcy will return in the next 24 to 48 hours in Odisha after cyclone Amphan hit the state.
The landfall process of cyclone ‘Amphan’ commenced at 2.30 pm on Wednesday between Digha in West Bengal and Hatiya island in Bangladesh, the Met department said.
Extremely severe cyclone ‘Amphan’ hurtled towards Indian shores on Wednesday, triggering downpour in coastal Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal, uprooting trees, flattening fragile dwellings and forcing evacuation of over four lakh people, officials said.
A total of 41 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in both Odisha and West Bengal including 7 reserves teams in the view of cyclone Amphan, said agency chief SN Pradhan on Tuesday adding that the NDRF is facing the “dual” challenge.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday chaired a high-level meeting to review the response preparedness against cyclone Amphan, developing in the Bay of Bengal.
