Atiq Ahmed’s son Aban Ahmed died during a road accident in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi district.
New Delhi: Aban Ahmad, the 21-year-old youngest son of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, was killed on Thursday, August 6, 2026, when the SUV he was travelling in crashed into a road divider on the Kanpur-Jhansi highway. He was on his way from Prayagraj to Jhansi jail to meet his elder brother when the vehicle, reportedly speeding, went out of control. Aban and his friend Sonu died on the spot; three other occupants were injured and hospitalised.
His death is the latest blow to a family that has been unravelling since April 2023, when Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf (Khalid Azim) were shot dead in Prayagraj while in police custody. Days earlier, another son, Asad Ahmad, was killed in a police encounter over the Umesh Pal murder case. Of Atiq's five sons, only two now remain: Umar, jailed in Lucknow facing multiple criminal cases, and Ali, lodged in Jhansi jail. Atiq's wife, Shaista Parveen, has been absconding for years in connection with the same case.
With Asad and now Aban gone, and Umar and Ali behind bars, no clear successor exists to inherit whatever remains of Atiq's political and criminal network. Atiq's own career moved fluidly across party lines, from an independent MLA in 1989, to the Samajwadi Party, to president of Apna Dal (Kamerawadi), back to the SP, and finally to AIMIM in 2021, which he joined from jail. That shifting political shield, combined with the family's underworld "infamous" links, once made the Ahmads a formidable force in Prayagraj politics.
