Mirzapur: Former IAS officer Divya Mittal on Sunday sparked fresh political speculation after visiting Maa Vindhyavasini Dham in Mirzapur, where she indicated that public support could influence her electoral decision. With a possible independent bid from Mirzapur Nagar in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and a potential 2029 Lok Sabha contest being discussed, attention is turning to her next political move.
Her visit during Navratri drew an enthusiastic reception, with residents showering her with flowers and women offering their blessings. The response has renewed interest in whether Mittal will translate her administrative experience and local connections into an electoral campaign.
Mittal, who previously served as Mirzapur’s District Magistrate, arrived in the district on the first day of Navratri. Supporters gathered to welcome her, raised slogans and showered her with flower petals. The warm reception appeared to move the former bureaucrat, while women and other residents expressed their affection and support.
Her visit to Maa Vindhyavasini Dham added significance to the occasion. The shrine is an important religious destination in the Vindhyachal region, particularly during Navratri, when devotees arrive in large numbers to offer prayers.
The visit also carried a political dimension. Mittal has recently announced her intention to enter politics independently, and her return to a district where she previously served as District Magistrate has prompted discussion about a possible electoral debut.
The possibility of Mittal contesting from Mirzapur Nagar in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections has emerged as a key talking point. She has indicated that she could consider entering the electoral contest if local residents extend their support and blessings.
However, she has not formally confirmed her candidature or announced a final electoral strategy. The possibility of a 2029 Lok Sabha bid has also been discussed, although her plans for that election remain unconfirmed.
Mittal has previously indicated that she intends to build a political platform centred on public participation rather than join an established political party. An independent candidature would require her to develop a grassroots organisation, establish a clear policy agenda and engage voters beyond her existing public profile.
Mittal’s association with Mirzapur dates back to her tenure as District Magistrate, which began in September 2022. During her time in the district, she attracted attention for public outreach and initiatives involving rural development, including efforts to improve piped drinking-water access in Lahuriyadah village.
Her administrative experience has become an important part of the narrative surrounding her entry into politics. She has spoken about the challenges faced by ordinary citizens when approved projects remain incomplete, public grievances go unresolved and administrative procedures fail to deliver the intended benefits.
In announcing her political plans, Mittal highlighted issues such as rural roads, inadequate infrastructure, examination paper leaks, recruitment delays and employment uncertainty amid the expansion of artificial intelligence. She has called for greater accountability and a more sustained focus on citizens’ everyday concerns.
These issues could form part of her political agenda if she decides to contest an election. Whether they translate into a formal campaign from Mirzapur, however, remains to be seen.

A 2013-batch IAS officer, Mittal resigned from the service in August, with her resignation accepted in September, according to the information previously reported. She subsequently confirmed her political ambitions on September 29, describing Uttar Pradesh as the starting point of her political journey.
Originally from Rewari in Haryana, she studied at IIT Delhi and IIM Bengaluru before working in London. She later returned to India, cleared the civil services examination and entered the IPS before securing selection to the IAS.
Her transition from administration to politics places her among former civil servants who have sought to bring their experience of governance into public life. Her stated emphasis is on accountability, justice, rural development and giving a voice to people whose concerns, she believes, often fail to receive adequate attention.
