Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has removed her nephew Akash Anand from the post of chief national coordinator, citing the need for greater political maturity before assigning him major responsibilities.
The decision comes as a major setback for Akash Anand, who was being seen as a key face of the BSP’s future leadership.
Addressing a meeting of the BSP’s national committee at the party’s state office in Lucknow, Mayawati said Akash Anand would continue working within the party but would not hold major responsibilities at this stage.
She said the party needs leaders with greater experience and political understanding, especially ahead of crucial electoral battles.
Mayawati also warned that opponents may try different strategies, including creating divisions and weakening the party’s organisation during elections. She said protecting the BSP’s interests remains the priority.
Akash Anand was elevated to a prominent position in August 2025 when he was appointed BSP national convenor. The move was widely seen as an indication that Mayawati was preparing him for a larger role in the party’s future.
His appointment had positioned him as one of the most important leaders in the BSP after Mayawati.
However, the latest decision has changed the political equation within the party and raised questions about the future leadership structure of the BSP.
Political observers believe Mayawati’s move reflects her cautious approach toward strengthening the party organisation before upcoming elections.
While Akash Anand has lost his key post, Mayawati has made it clear that he will remain associated with the BSP and continue working for the party.
