Kushinagar:

A four-day “Virat Kisan Mela” (Grand Farmers’ Fair) is being organised at the Block Resource Centre in Padrauna under the Agricultural Information System Strengthening and Farmer Awareness Programme. The event aims to educate farmers about government schemes, modern farming techniques, and sustainable agricultural practices.

On 21 January 2026, the third day of the fair was celebrated as “Kisan Diwas” (Farmers’ Day), which was formally inaugurated by District Magistrate Mahendra Singh Tanwar.

District Magistrate Inaugurates Farmers’ Day

During the inauguration, the District Magistrate visited various agricultural exhibition stalls set up by different government departments and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). He interacted directly with farmers and encouraged them to take full advantage of government welfare schemes and technical support available to them.

He emphasized that such fairs play a vital role in bridging the information gap between farmers and government institutions.

Experts Share Technical and Scientific Knowledge

Several agricultural experts addressed the farmers during the event.

  • Dr. Y.P. Bharti, Scientist from Sw. Babu Genda Singh Sugarcane Research Institute, Seorahi, provided detailed guidance on soil testing and the management of pests and diseases in spring-season sugarcane cultivation.

  • Dr. Shruti B., Meteorologist from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sargatia, shared important insights on weather forecasting and vegetable production, helping farmers plan their crops more effectively.

Focus on Sustainable Farming and Farmer Registry

Deputy Director of Agriculture, Atindra Singh, urged farmers to use balanced chemical fertilizers and pesticides under the “Save the Earth” campaign to maintain soil fertility. He stressed that completing the Farmer Registry is mandatory, warning that failure to do so could impact benefits under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme and future subsidies on seeds, fertilizers, and agricultural machinery.

Officials distribute subsidised agricultural equipment to farmers on Farmers’ Day

Farmers were also informed that free seeds of urad and moong would be provided for intercropping with spring sugarcane. Tokens for these seeds will be issued until 31 January, and farmers were encouraged to adopt intercropping practices.

Farmers Raise Issues During Kisan Diwas

Farmers presented several grievances during the Farmers’ Day session, including problems related to farmer registration, lack of sacks at procurement centers, absence of display boards at sugarcane weighing centers, and the issue of stray cattle.

In response, the District Sugarcane Officer informed that display boards had been installed at 10% of the weighing centers by Seorahi Sugar Mill, with the remaining centers to be covered soon.

District Magistrate Assures Quick Resolution

Addressing the gathering, the District Magistrate assured farmers that all complaints would be resolved promptly. He highlighted the importance of farmer registry and crop surveys and announced priority for ponds smaller than one hectare, along with a revenue department survey of ancient wells.

Distribution of Subsidized Agricultural Equipment

On the occasion, tarpaulins were distributed at a 50% subsidy to beneficiaries Kamesh Srivastava, Parma Yadav, and Smt. Kalawati.

Large Participation and Innovative Awareness Programme

The event witnessed the presence of senior agriculture officials, scientists, FPO representatives, and a large number of progressive farmers. The programme concluded with a unique awareness session by magician Rajesh Srivastava, who explained agricultural schemes in an engaging and entertaining manner through magic.
