New Delhi: Several students, women and supporters marching on Sunday at the Jantar Mantar faced a wave of fresh strength as they shouted "Azadi" and "Jai Hind" in protest after Sonam Wangchuk was rushed by ambulance to Safdarjung Hospital a day after authorities had detained him, citing his health condition amidst an extended hunger strike.
Though the day was a holiday, huge numbers of protesters kept arriving at the protest spot with the CRPF backing them up as heavily as possible. Protesters worried that Delhi Police could expel them without notice as the Monsoon Session of the House is about to begin.
The demonstration, centred on alleged NEET paper leak irregularities, has also begun attracting political support. Bhim Army chief and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad remained at the protest site overnight, while Samajwadi Party leader Rahul Awana reaffirmed his party's backing, accusing the Centre of ignoring students' concerns. He also dismissed allegations that the movement was politically funded.
Protesters at Jantar Mantar have been demanding compensation for the families of the NEET aspirants who allegedly committed suicide and have been demanding for Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to show moral responsibility and resign.
