New Delhi: In this episode of Dynamite News’ popular podcast  the Candid Talk , a serious and rapidly rising disease head and neck cancer was discussed in detail. Host Manoj Tibdewal Aakash spoke with renowned head and neck surgical oncologist Dr. Tapaswini Pradhan, who shared key insights on its causes, symptoms, myths, treatment, and prevention.

What is Head and Neck Cancer?
Dr. Pradhan explained that head and neck cancer is a group of cancers that develop in areas above the collarbone. These include the mouth, throat, nose, sinuses, thyroid, salivary glands, and even the windpipe. Each type behaves differently and requires specific treatment.

Rising Cases in India
The incidence of this cancer is increasing rapidly in India. It is the most common cancer among men and ranks fourth among women. India is often called the “global capital” of oral cancer, accounting for nearly 33% of cases worldwide.

Myth Around Biopsy
A common misconception is that a biopsy can spread cancer. Dr. Pradhan clarified that this is completely false. Biopsy is essential for accurate diagnosis and does not cause the disease to spread.

Major Causes and Risk Factors
Around 80-90% of head and neck cancer cases are linked to tobacco use, whether smoked or chewed. Other risk factors include alcohol consumption, betel nut, pan masala, viral infections (HPV, EBV), poor diet, pollution, and certain occupational exposures.

Importance of Early Symptoms
Early warning signs include non-healing mouth ulcers, unusual lumps, loose teeth, difficulty opening the mouth, voice changes, or trouble swallowing. If these symptoms persist for 2-3 weeks, medical consultation is necessary.

When Are White and Red Patches Dangerous?
Persistent white (leukoplakia) or red (erythroplakia) patches in the mouth can turn cancerous, especially if they do not respond to medication. In such cases, a biopsy is recommended.

Hoarseness and Throat Pain
If hoarseness lasts for 4-6 weeks or throat pain persists, it should not be ignored. While it may not always indicate cancer, evaluation is important.

Increasing Risk Among Youth
Earlier, this disease was more common among people aged 60-70. However, due to changing lifestyles and habits, younger individuals are now increasingly at risk.

Treatment and New Technologies
Surgery remains the primary treatment, though radiation and chemotherapy are also effective in certain cases. Advanced techniques like robotic surgery have made treatment less painful and more precise.

Mental and Social Impact
This cancer affects not only the body but also a person’s confidence and mental health. Changes in facial appearance, along with difficulties in speaking and eating, pose significant challenges.

Biggest Mistake: Ignoring Symptoms
Dr. Pradhan emphasized that the most common mistake patients make is ignoring early symptoms, which delays diagnosis and worsens the condition.

Role of Lifestyle and Diet
Adopting a healthy lifestyle can help prevent 40-50% of cancers. A balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management, and proper sleep are essential. Fast food and processed food should be minimized.

Family Support Matters
Support from family and friends plays a crucial role in helping patients cope mentally. Support groups can also be highly beneficial.

The discussion highlights that while head and neck cancer is serious, it is largely preventable. Early detection, proper treatment, and awareness can significantly improve outcomes. There is no need to fear only to stay alert.
