Chandigarh: Punjab University has announced a compensation package of ₹16 lakh and a government job for the brother of PhD scholar Jyoti, who died after being electrocuted on the university campus.
The decision comes in the wake of widespread student protests demanding justice, accountability and financial support for the bereaved family.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig met Jyoti's family to express condolences and assured them of the university's full support. Under the relief package, the family will receive ₹5 lakh from the Vice-Chancellor's Relief Fund and ₹11 lakh through the Dean Students' Welfare (DSW) office, taking the total compensation to ₹16 lakh.
In addition to the financial assistance, Jyoti's brother, who has completed Class 12 and holds an ITI qualification in Electrical, will be offered the post of Electrician, subject to Punjab government recruitment rules.

The university's announcement follows protests by students and family members, who demanded a fair investigation into the incident and stronger safety measures across the campus.
