New Delhi: A woman’s decision to walk away from a marriage proposal after learning about her prospective husband’s plans for his elderly mother has sparked a heated debate online. The woman said she respected the man’s responsibility toward his mother but did not agree to automatically take on the role of her caregiver after marriage.

According to the viral post shared on social media, the woman revealed that during a conversation with the prospective groom, she was informed that his mother would live with the couple after their marriage. The man reportedly justified the decision by saying that his mother was old and needed support.

The woman responded that she had no issue with him caring for his mother but questioned the expectation that she would become responsible for a decision she had not been involved in making. “I said, ‘Take care of her. Just don’t make me responsible for a decision I didn’t make,’” she wrote while explaining her decision.

Woman Says Marriage Should Involve Mutual Decisions

The woman argued that marriage should be based on discussions and mutual understanding between partners. According to her, entering a marriage should not mean accepting major responsibilities without prior agreement.

She further claimed that the man called her “selfish” after she refused the proposal. Defending herself, she said that personal boundaries and expectations should be discussed before marriage rather than assumed. “Marriage shouldn’t mean inheriting responsibilities you never agreed to,” she reportedly said.

Social Media Divided Over Elderly Parent Care

The post quickly went viral, dividing internet users into two groups. While some supported the woman’s argument, saying that couples should openly discuss living arrangements and caregiving responsibilities before marriage, others criticised her decision.

Some users argued that caring for ageing parents is a natural responsibility and questioned whether rejecting a partner for supporting his mother was fair.

One commenter wrote that the man was not avoiding his responsibility toward his parent and that the issue should have been approached with more understanding.

Others, however, said that expecting a spouse to become a full-time caregiver without discussion could create problems in the relationship.
