New Delhi: The Delhi Cabinet has approved the capital's new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2026–2030, paving the way for a faster transition to clean mobility. The policy, expected to come into effect from July 1, introduces a phased plan to replace conventional vehicles with electric alternatives while expanding incentives and charging infrastructure.
Under the new policy, only electric auto-rickshaws will be eligible for registration in Delhi from January 1, 2027. This move is aimed at reducing emissions from public transport and accelerating the adoption of electric three-wheelers across the city.
From April 1, 2028, the registration of new petrol and CNG-powered two-wheelers will be discontinued in the national capital. The government expects the measure to significantly curb vehicular pollution and encourage residents to switch to electric two-wheelers.
To promote early adoption, the policy offers financial incentives during its first year. Buyers of electric two-wheelers will receive a subsidy of Rs 30,000, while those purchasing electric three-wheelers will be eligible for Rs 50,000. However, no incentives have been announced for hybrid vehicles.
According to officials, vehicular emissions contribute nearly 23 per cent of Delhi's air pollution. The new EV policy seeks to address this challenge by boosting electric vehicle adoption, expanding charging infrastructure and strengthening the city's clean mobility ecosystem.
The latest framework succeeds Delhi's first EV Policy introduced in 2020, which had been extended beyond its original tenure. The updated roadmap focuses on reducing pollution, promoting sustainable transportation and supporting the long-term growth of electric mobility in the national capital.
