New Delhi: CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation, Koji Sato has issued a strong warning to nearly 500 suppliers asking them to quickly improve productivity or risk falling behind in a rapidly changing auto industry.

Speaking on March 25 at the annual supplier convention in Tokyo Sato addressed around 700 executives from 484 companies. He made it clear that the both Toyota and its partners are facing serious challenges.

Sato said,“We are battling for our very survival, urging everyone to recognize the urgency and work together to stay competitive.

Growing Pressure from Technology and Global Competition

Sato highlighted the several challenges affecting industries, including the shift to electric vehicles, new software driven technologies, and global trade issues like tariffs. He also admitted that Toyota is losing ground to faster and more cost efficient competitors, especially in markets like China.

While the Toyota has been strong in hybrid vehicles it has been slower than some rivals in adopting fully electric vehicles. At the same time the company has faced quality issues, recalls, and production delays, which have impacted its performance in market.

Call for Better Productivity and Innovation

Sato emphasized that improving productivity is key to survival. He urged suppliers to cut costs and speed up the innovation, and work more efficiently across all processes from design to manufacturing and delivery. He also suggested that the companies may need to rethink traditional ways of working.

This includes collaborating with firms outside the auto industry, such as those in AI, robotics, and data technology. Another major focus was improving quality while reducing delays. Sato noted that customers are still waiting too long for vehicles due to production issues.

A Shift in Toyota’s Approach

The speech marked a more direct and urgent tone than Toyota is usually known for. The company has long been praised for its stable and efficient systems but Sato’s message showed that even industry leaders must adapt quickly in today’s environment.

His remarks come just before he steps down as CEO on April 1, making this a significant moment for the company’s future direction.

What This Means for Suppliers and the Industry

For Toyota’s suppliers the message is clear, adapt or risk losing business. Smaller companies may find it especially challenging to keep up with the required changes.

The warning also reflects broader issues across the global auto industry. Traditional carmakers everywhere are dealing with rising competition and new technologies are changing customer demands. Despite the challenges, Toyota remains a strong player globally.

However, Sato’s message highlights that continued success will depend on how quickly the company and its partners can evolve with the time. As the industry transforms, Toyota is pushing for one key idea survival will require teamwork, innovation, and faster action from everyone involved.
