Ignis Sales Crash Sparks Speculation of a Quiet Exit
New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki’s compact hatchback Ignis may be nearing the end of its lifecycle in India, following reports that production has been stopped. Dealer sources indicate that manufacturing has been paused for over a month and offline bookings have also been discontinued.
However, the model continues to be listed for booking on the company’s official website, creating some uncertainty around its status. The automaker has not issued any formal statement addressing these developments so far.
Introduced in 2017, the Ignis was positioned as a premium urban hatchback aimed at younger buyers. Despite its distinctive design and compact footprint, the model struggled to maintain consistent demand in a highly competitive segment.
Sales figures reflect this downward trend. In February this year, the Ignis recorded a sharp year-on-year decline of nearly 50 percent, with sales dropping to 1,902 units from 3,780 units in the same month last year. Even price reductions following GST revisions which made the car more affordable by up to Rs 71,000 failed to revive sustained interest.
The Ignis was offered with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and previously had a diesel option as well. It also featured an automatic gear shift transmission, catering to urban driving needs. Despite these offerings and the hatchback faced stiff competition from better-selling models within the same segment.
While the Ignis struggles, Maruti Suzuki continues to report strong overall sales growth. In March 2026, the company posted total sales of 2,25,251 units, marking a 16.72 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Domestic passenger vehicle sales reached 1,66,219 units, reflecting a 10.27 percent rise. The compact segment, which includes several popular models, also saw growth, with sales increasing to 71,789 units.
Utility vehicles emerged as a key growth driver, registering the significant gains year-on-year. Meanwhile the light commercial vehicle sales also improved, indicating broad-based momentum across categories.
For the financial year 2025-26, Maruti Suzuki reported total sales of 24,22,713 units, up from 22,34,266 units in the previous year. This growth highlights the company’s strong market position despite underperformance in select models like the Ignis.
