New Delhi: Tesla is working on a new, smaller, and more affordable electric SUV. This vehicle will be an entirely new model, rather than a variant of the existing Model 3 or Model Y.
According to sources, production of this SUV will commence first in China. Subsequently, it may also be manufactured in the United States and Europe.
The new SUV will be smaller in size than the current Tesla Model Y. It will measure approximately 4.28 meters in length, making it more compact and well-suited for urban environments.
To make this vehicle affordable, the company plans to implement several changes:
As a result, its price could potentially be even lower than that of the Tesla Model 3.
Previously, Elon Musk had shelved plans for an affordable car (the "Model 2") to focus instead on robotaxis and AI robots. This new SUV, however, suggests that the company may be shifting its focus back toward affordable vehicles for the general consumer market.
Tesla now aims to build a vehicle that is capable of operating autonomously (driverless) in the future yet can still be driven manually by a human when necessary. This approach is pragmatic, as fully autonomous vehicles have not yet received regulatory approval in many countries around the world.
According to experts, Tesla's EV sales have been on a downward trend. Consequently, by introducing an affordable vehicle, the company hopes to attract a wider customer base and utilize its manufacturing facilities at full capacity.
This project is currently in its early stages. It has not yet been determined exactly when production of the vehicle will begin. Tesla has a history of initiating various projects only to subsequently delay or cancel them.
This new project represents a potentially significant turning point for Tesla. If successful, it could enable the company to once again solidify its foothold in the mass market through the sale of affordable electric vehicles.
