Patna: In a major policy decision, the Bihar government has announced a ban on the open sale of meat and fish near educational institutions, religious places, and crowded public areas. The move, officials say, is aimed at safeguarding children’s well-being and maintaining social harmony.

Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha said the measure is part of a broader initiative to regulate meat sales in urban areas. Referring to a communication issued by the Urban Development and Housing Department (UDHD), he said the issue was deliberated during a departmental meeting after feedback received through ‘Jankalyan Samvad’ interactions with members of civil society.

Sinha stated that restricting meat and fish sales near schools, religious institutions, and busy open spaces would help promote better public health standards, improve social interaction, and address concerns about children’s behavioural development. He clarified that the government is not targeting any specific food choice but emphasized the need for compliance with regulatory norms.

According to the Deputy Chief Minister, the step is intended to preserve social harmony, respect public sentiment, and reduce environmental pollution. He warned that strict action would be taken against those who violate the new guidelines.

Reacting to the decision, Union Minister Giriraj Singh welcomed the move, saying that open meat cutting and selling on roadsides contributes to pollution and undermines cleanliness standards. He described the state government’s action as a positive step.
