TTD Announces Rs 2 Lakh Insurance Cover For Tirumala Devotees (Img: Google)
Tirupati: The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has announced a major welfare initiative for devotees visiting the Tirumala shrine by introducing a Rs 2 lakh life insurance cover for pilgrims. The decision has gained attention as the scheme aims to provide financial assistance to families in case a devotee dies due to natural causes while visiting the world-famous Tirumala temple, one of India’s most visited pilgrimage destinations.
The TTD Board on Wednesday approved the introduction of a dedicated insurance facility for devotees coming to Tirumala. Under the new initiative, the temple administration will provide Rs 2 lakh to the family of a pilgrim who dies due to natural reasons during their visit to Tirumala. The move is being described as one of the first initiatives of its kind by a major religious institution in India, expanding the role of temple administration beyond pilgrimage management towards social welfare and family support.
Millions of devotees visit Tirumala every year to offer prayers at the famous Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple. With a large number of elderly devotees and people travelling long distances for darshan, concerns related to health emergencies and unexpected incidents remain an important aspect of pilgrimage management.
The new insurance scheme is aimed at reducing the financial burden on families during difficult circumstances and providing immediate support after the loss of a family member. The initiative reflects TTD’s broader approach towards improving facilities, safety measures and welfare support for pilgrims.
Along with the pilgrim insurance scheme, the TTD Board has also approved an increase in accidental insurance coverage for its employees. TTD Chairman B R Naidu announced that the accidental insurance amount for families of employees who die in accidents while serving in Tirumala has been increased from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.
The decision is aimed at strengthening financial protection for employees working in various departments connected with the functioning of the temple and pilgrimage services.
The latest decision highlights the changing role of large religious institutions in providing social security measures along with traditional religious services.
The TTD manages one of the busiest pilgrimage centres in the world, handling lakhs of devotees every year and overseeing a wide range of facilities, including accommodation, food distribution, transportation and medical support. The introduction of insurance coverage adds another layer to the welfare system by extending assistance to families facing sudden personal loss.
The implementation process of the new pilgrim insurance scheme is expected to be worked out by the TTD administration, including eligibility conditions, claim procedures and other operational details. The initiative could also encourage other large pilgrimage centres to consider similar welfare measures for devotees. With millions of visitors travelling to Tirumala annually, the scheme is expected to become an important part of the temple’s devotee support system.
