New Delhi: The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Sunday formally appointed former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav as its national working president, signalling a generational shift in the party’s leadership. The move comes as the RJD seeks to strengthen its position ahead of upcoming political challenges in Bihar.

The announcement was made during the inaugural session of the party’s national executive meeting, where party supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav handed over the appointment letter to his son in the presence of senior leaders, including former Bihar chief minister Rabri Devi.

The working president post is a new position within the RJD, reflecting a structural change in the party’s organisational hierarchy. Analysts say the elevation is designed to give the 36-year-old leader greater authority over day-to-day party functioning and decision-making.

Context: Election Setback and Vote Share Gains

The appointment follows the RJD’s underwhelming performance in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, where the party contested 143 seats as part of the Mahagathbandhan alliance with the Congress, winning only 25. Despite the limited seat tally, the RJD emerged as the single largest party by vote share, and Tejashwi Yadav retained his seat from Raghopur.

“The creation of this post is aimed at empowering Tejashwi to strengthen the party’s organisational machinery ahead of future elections,” a senior RJD leader said.

Family Tensions and Leadership Dynamics

The leadership reshuffle comes amid visible tensions within the Yadav family, which have surfaced publicly in recent months. Tejashwi’s elder brother, Tej Pratap Yadav, and elder sister, Rohini Acharya, had made remarks questioning party stability and its electoral performance.

Tej Pratap Yadav was expelled from the RJD for six years over what the party termed “irresponsible behaviour” and later founded his own party, the Janshakti Janta Dal (JJD). He also lost the recent Bihar Assembly election from the Mahua constituency.

Consolidating Leadership Ahead of the Future

Party insiders suggest that Tejashwi’s elevation is not just a symbolic gesture but a step toward centralising authority within the younger generation of the RJD. With the state’s political landscape becoming increasingly competitive, the move is widely viewed as RJD’s effort to consolidate leadership and project a renewed image to voters.

The appointment marks a new chapter in the party’s history, with the leadership transition expected to influence both strategic decisions and electoral calculations in Bihar’s charged political environment.
