Mainpuri: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has intensified the political debate over the Mainpuri moustache controversy by meeting and honouring Jagdish Yadav, whose moustache became a talking point amid the row involving a local police officer.

The controversy erupted after a video of Mainpuri CO Ashok Singh went viral, where he was seen flaunting his moustache and making remarks that triggered a political exchange between the SP and BJP.

Akhilesh’s Gesture Sends Political Signal

Akhilesh Yadav’s meeting with Jagdish Yadav is being seen as a symbolic move by the SP, with the party highlighting issues of respect, identity and social representation. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister shared pictures from the meeting, drawing attention across political circles.

The development comes after Akhilesh had earlier targeted the government over the police officer’s viral video, alleging that some officials were acting with political backing.

Moustache Debate Before UP Elections

The Mainpuri controversy has gained significance ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, where the SP is focusing on social equations and strengthening its connect with different communities.

Mainpuri has traditionally been a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party, and political observers see Akhilesh’s latest move as an attempt to turn a local controversy into a broader electoral message.
