Nitish Kumar to step down as MLC today
Patna: A major development is set to unfold in Bihar politics on Monday. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will resign from his position as a Member of the Bihar Legislative Council (MLC). This information was provided by JDU MLA Anant Kumar Singh. He stated that many party leaders had urged the Chief Minister not to take this step, but Nitish Kumar remained firm on his decision. This decision is being seen as a significant turning point in the state's politics.
Nitish Kumar was recently elected as the National President of the Janata Dal (United). No other leader filed a nomination against him, resulting in his unopposed election. Political analysts believe that after assuming this new responsibility, he has made this decision to focus more on the organization and national politics.
Leadership change in Bihar? Nitish Kumar may resign from Legislative Council soon
Nitish Kumar filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections on March 5. In an emotional message, he expressed his long-standing desire to become a member of both houses of Parliament. He reiterated his commitment to Bihar's development and pledged to guide the new government. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has welcomed his decision.
Nitish Kumar's political career has been filled with many ups and downs. He entered politics as an MLA in 1985 and later served as a Union Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. He became the Chief Minister of Bihar for the first time in 2005. Since then, he has experienced several political shifts between the BJP and the Grand Alliance, but his grip on power has remained intact. In 2025, he won a landslide victory for the fifth time and was sworn in as Chief Minister for the tenth time.
BJP President Nitin Nabin Credits Nitish Kumar for Bihar’s Transformation
Nitish Kumar's return to national politics could further strengthen the BJP's role in the Bihar government. This could give the party greater influence in the government and an opportunity to stake a claim to the Chief Minister's post. BJP leader and current Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary is considered a frontrunner for this position.
However, several JDU leaders say that Nitish Kumar's son, Nishant Kumar, who recently entered active politics, should be his successor. According to reports party leaders believe that Nishant Kumar possesses all the necessary qualities to become Chief Minister.
