Former MP and senior RJD leader Vijay Krishna resigned from the party days after its defeat in the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025. Citing withdrawal from active politics, his exit marks a major setback for RJD and reshapes political dynamics in Bihar.

RJD Faces New Crisis After Defeat in Bihar Elections
Patna: Immediately after the crushing defeat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, the RJD has suffered another major blow. Senior and influential party leader and former MP and minister in the Lalu-Rabri government, Vijay Krishna, has resigned from the RJD.
He was known as one of Lalu Prasad Yadav's closest confidantes. Earlier, he had also been a close associate of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and had even defeated Nitish in a Lok Sabha election once.
Bihar Election: RJD to challenge results in court; Tejashwi Yadav elected party leader
In his resignation letter, Vijay Krishna did not level any allegations against any individual or the leadership. In his letter to Lalu Yadav, he said, “I have decided to distance myself from party politics and active politics. Therefore, I am resigning from the primary membership and all posts of the Rashtriya Janata Dal.”
His decision has suddenly created a stir in the party, as it is another psychological blow for the RJD after the electoral defeat.
Vijay Krishna is a well-known name in Bihar politics. He is also among the leaders who emerged from the JP movement, just like Lalu Yadav and Nitish Kumar.
His village is Kalyanpur in Athmalgola, which is only 8 km away from Nitish Kumar's village, Bakhtiyarpur. Both started their political careers together and remained together from student politics to the Janata Dal era.
Traveling together by train and engaging in political discussions showed the depth of their relationship. But when Nitish Kumar separated from Lalu Prasad and chose his own political path, Vijay Krishna stood by Lalu.
This decision later became the reason for the distance between the two.
Vijay Krishna and Nitish Kumar's home constituency, according to the old delimitation, was the Barh Lok Sabha constituency. Because of this, the two contested elections against each other several times.
In 1999, Nitish Kumar defeated Vijay Krishna. In 2004, the situation changed. Nitish Kumar felt that Vijay Krishna was strong in Barh, so he contested from two seats—Nalanda and Barh.
As a result, in 2004, Vijay Krishna became the Member of Parliament from the Barh constituency, while Nitish Kumar won from Nalanda and entered the Lok Sabha. This victory is considered one of the biggest achievements of Vijay Krishna's political career.
Bihar Election Result: Massive setback for RJD; But Lalu–Tejashwi quietly celebrate
Vijay Krishna's departure from the party is a significant loss for the RJD. On one hand, the major defeat in the elections had raised questions about the party's strategy and leadership, and on the other hand, the departure of such a senior and trusted leader further weakens the party's current position.
This incident could also signal new political alignments in Bihar politics.
