Amazon to Lay Off 30,000 employees; Decision taken to compensate for overhiring

New Delhi: A report claims that Amazon plans to lay off approximately 10% of its approximately 350,000 corporate employees.

The report claims that Amazon plans to “cut approximately 30,000 corporate jobs,” sparking a heated debate on social media about job security and layoffs.

According to a report, the company is now preparing to reduce its workforce to reduce costs and offset excessive hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What was the reaction on social media?
One Reddit user wrote, “Layoffs will continue.” Many people commented on the post, expressing similar concerns.

Others claimed that the “real reason” behind this decision was something else and pointed to artificial intelligence (AI). One person posted, “This is bad news not just for Amazon employees, but for everyone looking for a job.

You’ll have to compete with thousands of fired FAANG engineers for a job.” A third claimed, “Amazon treats employees horribly. It doesn’t matter if you’re a highly educated developer or a delivery driver.” You’re really just a scapegoat.” A fourth said, “I wonder how many years companies will be able to exploit the pandemic for excessive hiring.”

How many employees are being laid off?
According to a Reuters report, Amazon is planning to lay off “10%” of its approximately 350,000 corporate employees. The multinational tech company reportedly has a total of 1.55 million employees. However, this will be the largest layoff at Amazon since the end of 2022. According to the outlet, managers of affected teams have received special training on how to communicate with employees who will receive layoff emails.

Which departments will be affected?
Amazon has been laying off some employees across various departments for the past two years. The new layoffs starting this week will affect human resources (HR), devices and services, and operations departments. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in June that the company was increasing its use of AI (artificial intelligence). This could lead to further job losses, especially those that require repetitive tasks.

Paramount to Cut 1,000 Jobs
According to a report, Paramount-Skydance is planning to lay off approximately 1,000 employees starting Wednesday. This move follows the $8.4 billion merger between the two companies. These layoffs will represent approximately 5% of Paramount’s total workforce. By December 2024, Paramount had approximately 18,600 permanent and part-time employees and 3,500 project-based workers. This decision comes after Warner Bros. Discovery rejected Paramount-Skydance’s $60 billion offer. Despite this, David Ellison’s company, Skydance, is still considered the strongest contender.
