Maulana Ubaidullah Sindhi
New Delhi: 15 August is around the corner, and Indian Independence will turn 79; to make India a free, sovereign, and republic states, several people has given their life resisting against the brutal British Rule.
Today we are here with a legendary crusader for Indian independence, Maulana Ubaidullah Sindhi. Maulana was born on 10 March 1872 in Sialkot (now in Pakistan) in a Punjabi Sikh family as Buta Singh Uppal. He lost his father at the age of 4.
After being influenced by the writings of Maulana Ubaidullah of Malerkotla, he converted to Islam at the age of 15 and chose “Ubaidullah Sindhi” as his new name and moved to Sindh from Punjab.
Sindhi travelled to Afghanistan in 1915 at the direction of his teacher, Maulana Mahmudul Hasan. There he was one of the prime movers of the ‘reshmi rumal’ movement to overthrow the British.
Maulana stayed in Kabul for seven years, working closely with the revolutionaries in the provisional independent government for India, where he held the position of Home Minister from 1 December 1915 to January 1919. He moved to Moscow along with his several comrades in October 1922.
While staying in Moscow, Maulana observed the principles of communism and the attempts to bring these principles to practice in the Soviet Union. When he reached Istanbul after nine months, Maulana published a draft of a constitution for Free India in Urdu from Istanbul in 1924.
He also formed a party, the Mahabharat Svarajia Party, to promote the political programme his constitution envisage. The British government confiscated copies of the document, and Ubaidullah was forced to remain in exile in Turkey, Italy, and Arab.
In 1938, Maulana and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose formed a strategic nationalist alliance, collaborating on plans for an armed revolt against British rule and opposing the partition of India. He also opposed the Pakistan plan of Mohammad Ali Jinnah and the Muslim League. He went to Rahim Yar Khan (now in Pakistan) to visit his daughter in 1944, where he fell ill and died on 21 August 1944.
