Are Luxury Hotels Really Safe For Dining? Food Safety Shock As Taj, Radisson Among Bengaluru 5-Star Hotels Raided

Bengaluru’s luxury hotel kitchens faced a major food safety crackdown after officials found expired milk, rotten vegetables and unsafe meat. Here’s what the raids revealed and what action hotels may face next.

New Delhi: A food safety inspection drive across Bengaluru’s luxury hotels has uncovered serious violations, including expired food products, rotten vegetables, unsafe meat and poor hygiene practices in several premium establishments.

The Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration Department conducted raids at multiple three-star and five-star hotels across Bengaluru Urban district, following which officials seized and destroyed large quantities of food items that were allegedly unfit for consumption.

The Lalit Ashok, Taj Yeshwantpur Among Hotels Inspected

During the inspections, officials found violations at some of Bengaluru’s well-known hospitality properties, including The Lalit Ashok, Taj Yeshwantpur, Shangri-La Bengaluru and other luxury hotels.

At The Lalit Ashok, authorities seized and destroyed 76 kg of meat, 200 kg of vegetables and 32 litres of expired milk. Officials also recovered unsafe food items from other establishments, including expired bakery products and improperly stored meat.

The largest seizure was reported at Radisson Blu (The Atria), where around 105 kg of expired food products were destroyed. The seized items included chicken, meat, fish and vegetables.

Food Samples Sent For Laboratory Testing

Around 30 food safety teams inspected 26 hotels across different zones of Bengaluru. Officials collected 35 samples of food products, including chicken, mutton, fish, milk, cooking oil, spices, cheese and sauces, which have been sent for laboratory examination.

Authorities reported finding unhygienic kitchen conditions, fungal growth on vegetables, improper storage practices, expired products and violations of food labelling rules.

Legal Action Likely Against Violators

The Food Safety Department has issued notices to the concerned food business operators and said legal action will be initiated if violations are confirmed.

Officials have warned hotels and restaurants across Karnataka to strictly follow regulations under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and maintain proper hygiene standards.
