New Delhi: Indian benchmark indices opened lower on Tuesday as global market weakness and geopolitical concerns weighed on investor sentiment. The Sensex and Nifty started the trading session in the red amid mixed signals from international markets.
The 30-share BSE Sensex declined 73.62 points, or 0.09%, to open at 77,295.49. Meanwhile, the NSE Nifty 50 fell 43.3 points to 24,175.75 in early trade. The previous session saw the Sensex close at 77,369.11, while the Nifty ended at 24,219.05.
The decline in Indian markets came after weakness in Asian equities following a tech-led sell-off on Wall Street. Major US technology and semiconductor stocks witnessed pressure, affecting global investor confidence.
Market sentiment was also influenced by rising geopolitical concerns, including fresh US sanctions on Iran and movements in crude oil prices. Brent crude remained around the $92 per barrel mark, adding to market uncertainty.
Among Sensex-listed companies, TCS, Tata Steel, Eternal, Adani Ports and Titan were among the early gainers. TCS led the gainers, rising around 0.80% in early trading.
On the other hand, Bajaj Finance, Hindustan Unilever, Power Grid, State Bank of India and Sun Pharma were among the major losers. Bajaj Finance declined more than 0.64%.
The broader market also witnessed selling pressure during early trade. On the NSE, 1,274 stocks declined, while 1,266 stocks advanced and 136 stocks remained unchanged.
Analysts said the near-term market outlook remains cautious due to weak global indicators, crude oil prices, geopolitical developments and upcoming corporate earnings.
GIFT Nifty indicated a negative start for Indian markets, opening nearly 59 points lower at 24,152 compared to the previous close of 24,211.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained buyers on August 24, purchasing equities worth ₹1,181.66 crore. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) also bought shares worth ₹2,493.41 crore.
Asian markets remained under pressure on Tuesday. Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.28%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 0.28%. South Korea’s Kospi fell 1.24%, and Shanghai’s SSE Composite index slipped 0.15%.
