MGL hikes CNG price to Rs 84/kg in Mumbai
Mumbai: Mahanagar Gas (MGL) on Thursday raised the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) by Rs 2 per kg, bringing it to Rs 84 per kg across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and other areas of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The previous rate was Rs 82 per kg.
The price hike comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, including the Iran-US conflict that erupted on February 28, 2026, which has disrupted energy supply chains in West Asia.
Brent crude oil prices have remained above USD 105 per barrel in recent days, as global inventories dwindle amid Middle East unrest. MGL had last revised CNG prices on April 12, 2026.
Following the announcement, auto unions have called for a minimum Rs 1 increase in base fares, citing rising operational costs. With over 12 lakh vehicles running on CNG in Mumbai—including 4.7 lakh auto rickshaws, 1.6 lakh taxis, and over 5 lakh private cars—drivers say sustaining current fare rates has become challenging.
The revision comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent push for fuel austerity, urging citizens to limit the use of fuel-driven vehicles and cutting down on his own convoy size.
MGL Shares Rebound
The stock responded positively to the news, opening at Rs 1,055.65 on the BSE, up from the previous close of Rs 1,043.40. It later touched a high of Rs 1,072.25 and was last trading at Rs 1,061, up 1.69%, with a market capitalization of Rs 10,480.32 crore.
